How to Know If Therapy Is Working
Progress is not always dramatic, but it should become meaningful.
More choice, less automatic reaction
Therapy is working when something becomes more conscious, more workable or less automatic. A client may notice a familiar pattern earlier, feel more choice in a difficult moment or relate to themselves with less shame.
Practical signs of movement
Progress can be a clearer decision, a more honest conversation, better boundaries, more emotional regulation or the ability to stay present where avoidance used to take over.
One session can matter
Therapy does not always need to be long to be useful. Sometimes a single focused session can clarify the central issue and create enough movement for the client to take the next step.
